Each summer True Friends hires hundreds of summer staff to support our summer camp program. Staff members are given the opportunity to apply for scholarships to help support their education. This year, thanks to some generous donors, we were able to award scholarships to two individuals.

Lexie is the recipient of the Elliot Christian Sholtis Stealey Memorial scholarship Lexie has worked as a Camp Nursing Assistant the past two summers and is attending St. Charles Community College as a Nursing major.

“Working with True Friends has impacted my life so much. It has validated my career choice as a nurse. True Friends has pushed me to continue working with people with disabilities and special needs. Over the past two summers, the campers changed my outlook on life and helped me realize what I wanted to do after graduation. After I graduate, I want to continue working as a nurse with this community.”

Madison is the recipient of the Erkens Scholarship, Madison. Madison spent last summer as an Activities Counselor and is attending the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities as a Psychology major and Neuroscience minor.

“Deciding to take the job as activities counselor for the summer has been one of the best decisions that I have ever made. This summer I feel like I have grown and become more understanding and compassionate. All of the campers that I worked with this summer have shown me that no matter what obstacles they have in their lives that there is always something to be happy about. It was truly the best experience I have ever had in my life and I cannot wait to do it all over again next summer.  Working for True Friends this summer has also made me sure of my career path. Before starting this summer, I knew that I wanted to become an art therapist and work specifically with kids with various disabilities. This summer was like a test run for me to see if it was going to be something that I was going to actually enjoy doing and be good at. After this summer I am now confident in my decision to become an art therapist and work with this population.”

Thank you, Lexie and Madison, for the hard work, dedication, and passion you displayed last summer. Congratulations!
