Jenny, Amanda’s Mom (Camp Program):
Jenny was so nervous driving down the road to Camp Eden Wood to drop her daughter, Amanda, off for her first stay. “The first time we dropped her off, and were leaving, I had to hold back my tears because I had never left her before,” Jenny explained, remembering the experience. After her daughter came home, Jenny realized that True Friends would be a home away from home for Amanda.
“She loved everything about it. She leaves Camp happy and tired,” Jenny said. When we asked Jenny what she would share with other caregivers who were considering sending their loved ones to True Friends for the first time she said, “You can bring your loved one here knowing that they will be treated with the utmost trust and care. True Friends is amazing, and we trust them wholeheartedly.”
Mandy, Jordan’s Mom (Therapy and Adaptive Riding Program):
“This program has greatly impacted us because we see how much happier he [Jordan] is and how much more he can do. It’s also nice meeting with other families that you can connect with. I think that anyone that came here would really enjoy it.” She added that the environment is great for relationship building, and that it has helped to create a sense of community – both for herself and for Jordan.
Cassidy, Triston’s Mom (Respite Program):
From a caregiver standpoint, Cassidy is grateful for the depth of relationships she’s experienced through the respite program. She is in constant communication with the staff who work with Triston and appreciates their updates about how he’s doing from day to day and any challenges that may arise. She said she views the Respite staff as part of a caregiving team, and that she’s so appreciative of their genuine empathy and commitment to Triston’s care, independence, and growth.
“Respite at True Friends for Triston means that he has a place that he’s accepted, he has a place that’s his – his friends, his program, his day. He gets to go and be heard. It means a lot,” Cassidy, shared. “When I send him here, I know he’s safe, he’s having a good time, and he’s with people he trusts – and that’s huge for me.”
Teri, Maryn’s Mom (Therapy and Adaptive Riding Program):
“I think Maryn and I would both say that our time riding together is out favorite time of the week.” Even though she’s working hard during her sessions, Maryn has so much fun. Over the years, she has fallen in love with the horses and has built friendships with staff and other participants.
Amber, Lily’s Mom (Therapy and Adaptive Riding Program):
Amber and Lily both love the time they get to spend at Therapy and Adaptive Riding each week. “It gives my daughter a fun activity where she can do age-appropriate things,” Amber said. “I know she loves coming here, she gets excited to come here, so that’s always rewarding for us as parents. She just lights up when we say we are coming here.”
