This article will provide insights into choosing the right camp and help you make an informed decision as you care for your loved one.

1. Research Disability-Friendly Camps

Camp Courage

True Friends has three locations offering programs in 2025. Located in Maple Lake, Minnesota, True Friends Camp Courage is about 50 minutes away from the heart of the Twin Cities. With over 300 acres of land, Camp Courage is our largest camp. Camp Courage sits on the beautiful shore of Cedar Lake, a beautiful lake where water games and activities bring out the joy of experiencing Minnesota summers. Camp Courage offers a wide range of fully accessible activities including: a high-ropes course, ziplining, ga-ga ball, tubing, and numerous paved nature trails to explore.

Did you hear the exciting news? Camp Courage is receiving a makeover and construction is underway. A new state-of-the-art Recreation Center will replace the current gymnasium and pool. This new facility will feature a zero-entry therapeutic temperature-controlled pool, splash pad, an enlarged gymnasium court, and a performance stage. True Friends is dedicated to serving our thousands of annual participants to the highest level of excellence. The new Recreation Center at Camp Courage will enhance the overall participant experience at Camp Courage and ensure the sustainability of Camp Courage for many years to come.

Camp Friendship

True Friends Camp Friendship, located in Annandale, Minnesota and is just 10 minutes north of Camp Courage. Situated on 115 acres of land alongside Clearwater Lake, Camp Friendship offers the same list of accessible activities as Camp Courage, but with its own unique style. Camp Friendship is surrounded by fencing to allow campers to freely and safely explore all Camp Friendship has to offer. With a variety of accessible cabins, facilities, and activity spaces, Camp Friendship is designed to meet the diverse needs of individuals with disabilities. From adaptive sports to nature exploration, the camp offers a welcoming environment where everyone can participate and thrive.

Camp Eden Wood

Located in the Twin Cities in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, Camp Eden Wood has a long history of serving participants with disabilities in the metro area. Opened over 100 years ago, Camp Eden Wood originally operated as a respite camp for youth with Tuberculosis. Today, True Friends serves a wide variety of individuals and groups at this location. Camp Eden Wood offers a ropes challenge course, nature trails, wildlife and many other outdoor activities. True Friends is excited to announce that in 2025, Camp Eden Wood will offer day camp sessions for campers who wish to attend camp during routine, day-time schedules. This disability-friendly camp style is perfect for your child with special needs who would enjoy the camp experience with the familiarity of sleeping in their own home.

2.Make Sure the Camp Serves Your Loved One’s Age Range

What ages does True Friends serve? Short answer: between 5 and 105! While specific camp sessions have their own age requirements, there’s a camp for everyone between ages 5 and 105. Whether it’s a first-time camper or a returning participant, True Friends provides a welcoming space for people of all ages and abilities to connect, grow, and of course, have fun.

3. Determine Care Ratio

One of the first steps to consider when choosing a camp for your child/loved one with special needs is finding out what care ratios are available. At True Friends camps, two care ratios are available: High (1:1) and Medium (3:1) care. Our staff are well-prepared to meet the needs of campers, completing 1-3 weeks of in-person training each year, plus 12 hours of online courses. Not sure what care ratio is best for your loved one? Don’t worry! Our team is happy to assist in determining a care plan that best suits your child with special needs.

4. Look for a Camp With Plenty of Activities That Are Accessible

What do you think of when you hear the words “summer camp”? Does archery, swimming, campfires, and tubing come to mind? True Friends has a wide range of activities for individuals of all abilities. From the wheelchair-accessible zipline and high ropes course, to tubing and archery, there is something for everyone. Popular camp activities include the zipline, talent show, and dance party. Camp is all about trying new things and discovering hidden passions. Whether it’s exploring nature or making lifelong friends, True Friends creates an inclusive environment where everyone can find joy and create lasting memories.

5. Find a Camp That Offers Special Dietary Accommodations

Does your loved have a specialized diet? Not a problem! We know camp is a change of scenery, but that does not mean it has to be a complete lifestyle change. Our kitchen team can accommodate a number of dietary requirements. The majority of special diet requirements can be fulfilled onsite. The week prior to arrival, Dietary Interns and Foodservice Leadership review all diets and make menu plans for the upcoming week. They’ll also reach out to caregivers before arrival to answer any questions.

At check in, Dietary Interns meet with caregivers to review camper needs and preferences. Special dietary needs may include, but are not limited to gluten-free, dairy-free, whole food allergies, dye Allergies, vegetarian/vegan, and low-sodium. For more information, check out our Camp Catalog.

Your loved one’s special dietary needs are important to us. Dietary needs are carefully managed by camp staff which allows campers and caregivers to focus on having an unforgettable camp experience.

6. Apply to Camp
